Dog Care During Summer

If you are trying to think of the most enjoyable season for dogs and their owners is probably summer.Plenty of long warm days and evenings mean ideal walking conditions.A brisk walk in the morning or a long evening stroll really is one of life’s pleasures.A good walk is great for your health, and your dog will also benefit from the exercise and fresh air. But there are a few dangers around during the summer months that every dog owner should be aware of.

BBQs

We all love the taste of food cooked al fresco over hot coals. And whilst outside cooking on a BBQ many dog owners allow their dog to roam free in the garden. But did you realise that having your dog around a BBQ can be very dangerous.Your dog may not understand that the BBQ is hot until it’s too late. And a lively dog may easily bump into the BBQ, injuring or burning itself. Plus, human food cooked on a BBQ is not actually very healthy for a dog.Dogs don’t mind begging for more, so offering him one sausage will only mean he expects another.Greasy human food offers your dog no nutritional or health benefits and your dog will always ask for more.Instead, offer him a tasty bowl of his favourite dog food. Plus, your dog could end up choking on small bones if you offer it chicken wings or drumsticks.

A plentiful supply of fresh water

Water is an essential part of your dog’s daily nutritional routine.During the hot summer months water is vitally important so your dog does not become dehydrated.Make sure that you offer a bowl full of clean, fresh water with every bowl of food and when you are out and about take a bottle of water and a bowl with you.Your dog will be grateful of the drink!

Avoid keeping the Dog in a Hot Car

You should never, ever leave your dog alone in your car for a prolonged period of time, especially in times of hot weather. Just remember that cars can quickly become very hot inside when parked in direct sunlight. This can make the dog dehydrate and in the worst case scenario could cause death.Instead, take your dog with you wherever you go, or leave him at home.

Sun Screen

Dogs are as vulnerable to the sun’s rays as humans. You can protect your dog with pet friendly sun screen (don’t be tempted to use human sun screen). A dog’s nose and ears can be particularily affected, so make sure you apply a good layer of sun screen to these areas.
